The Greater Bay Area or “GBA” refers to the city cluster in the Pearl River Delta of South China, consisting of two special administrative regions (Macau and Hong Kong) and nine cities of Guangdong province (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing).
With a total are of 56,100 square kilometers and 86 million people, the GBA has been one of the best economically developed regions of China with the country’s largest exporters and tech firms. The Greater Bay Area contributes to about 11 percent of China’s economy.
The development of the Greater Bay Area is accorded the status of key strategic planning in the country’s development blueprint, having great significance in the country’s implementation of innovation-driven development and commitment to reform and opening-up.

mainland China in 1997 and 1999, respectively. The Mainland announced to the international
community that Hong Kong and Macau are “special administrative regions” for which a “one
country, two systems” arrangement would be adopted for a period of 50 years.
Macau and the Portuguese-speaking Countries have maintained close historical and cultural relations over the centuries.
Macau shares with Portuguese-speaking Countries the same administrative and legal system as well as the recognition of Portuguese as a second official language.
